Women’s golf is experiencing unprecedented growth across the United States, and organizations like the Ladies Executive Golf Society (LEGS) are helping fuel that momentum by creating welcoming spaces where women can connect, learn, and thrive through the game.
Golf Americas recently spoke with LEGS President Jillian Johnson about the rise of women’s golf, the power of community, and why more women are discovering the game than ever before.

Why Women’s Golf Is Thriving

According to Johnson, several factors have contributed to the recent surge in women’s participation.
“As challenging as the pandemic was, it accelerated many of the trends we’re seeing today,” she says. “Women were seeking connection, wellness, outdoor activities, and meaningful social experiences, and golf naturally provided all of those things.”
She also believes younger generations view golf differently than previous ones.
“Golf has evolved beyond being just a sport. Today it’s a lifestyle experience that combines wellness, networking, friendship, and personal growth. Women appreciate the opportunity to be active, spend time outdoors, disconnect from technology, and build relationships all at the same time.”
Perhaps most importantly, Johnson notes that more women want access to the opportunities and conversations that often take place on the golf course.
“Women want to be included and create their own experiences within the game.”

The LEGS Difference: Community First

LEGS has experienced remarkable membership growth in recent years, something Johnson attributes to the organization’s strong emphasis on community.
“We want every woman who attends a LEGS event to feel welcomed, valued, and comfortable, regardless of her golf experience,” she explains.
The organization has successfully attracted women who may be new to golf or who don’t necessarily identify as avid golfers.
“Many women are looking for connection more than competition. We’ve created an environment where women can learn, laugh, network, and enjoy themselves without feeling intimidated.”
Johnson believes today’s busy professionals are drawn to experiences that provide multiple benefits at once.
“A LEGS event can offer networking, confidence-building, stress relief, friendship, and skill development all in one setting.”

A Diverse and Growing Membership

One of the most rewarding aspects of LEGS has been the diversity of its membership.
“We see women from all walks of life,” says Johnson. “One of the beautiful things about golf is its ability to connect generations.”
She points to friendships formed between women in their twenties building careers and women in their sixties sharing decades of professional and life experience.
“Those relationships create incredible value and are one of the things that make our community so special.”
Rather than focusing solely on scores and competition, LEGS emphasizes relationship-building through golf.
“We’re not a traditional golf league. We’re focused on creating meaningful connections through the game.”

More Than Golf

While members enjoy exclusive retreats, educational programs, special events, and member benefits, Johnson believes the greatest value goes beyond the tangible offerings.
“Our members stay connected long after events end. They organize tee times, support each other’s businesses, celebrate accomplishments, and provide personal and professional encouragement.”
Many women initially join for networking opportunities but discover something even more valuable.
“They leave with genuine friendships, increased confidence, and a real sense of belonging.”

Leading With Purpose

As President of LEGS, Johnson remains motivated by the impact she sees on members’ lives.
“What inspires me most are the stories of women stepping outside their comfort zones, gaining confidence, and discovering new opportunities through golf.”
She adds, “Watching women support one another, build friendships, and grow both personally and professionally is incredibly meaningful.”

Golf’s Lasting Impact

Golf has also played a significant role in Johnson’s own life.
“I actually met my husband on a golf course while playing with my father,” she says with a smile. “Golf has shaped some of the most important relationships in my life.”
She also recalls interviewing for a job during a golf tournament, an experience that demonstrated the unique role golf plays in business and relationship-building.
One memory stands out in particular: LEGS’ first retreat at Streamsong Resort.
“We were one of the only women’s groups there, and it felt like we were helping change perceptions simply by showing up,” she recalls. “I also happened to shoot one of my best rounds ever—a 74—which made the experience even more memorable.”

Lessons Beyond the Fairways

For Johnson, golf remains one of life’s greatest teachers.
“It teaches resilience, patience, humility, and perspective,” she says. “You never truly master the game, which is part of what makes it so rewarding.”
Beyond the competition, she treasures the conversations and relationships formed along the way.
“Some of the most meaningful connections in my life have happened while walking fairways with people.”
And perhaps that’s the lasting appeal of golf itself.
“There’s something incredibly therapeutic about being outdoors, focused on one shot at a time. Golf can challenge you, humble you, surprise you, and reward you—all in the same round.”
For the growing community of women discovering the game through organizations like LEGS, that’s exactly what makes golf such a powerful platform for connection, growth, and opportunity.
