• Álvarez joins the Mexican Golf Federation after leading IGPM, an organization that later became XUNTAS, an entity dedicated to the comprehensive development of women’s golf in Mexico.
  • A former professional and standout amateur golfer, Álvarez played in the 2012 U.S. Women’s Open and was national champion in 2004.
Mexico City, August 7, 2025 — The Mexican Golf Federation is pleased to announce the appointment of Liliana Álvarez Salum as its new General Director, a role she assumes in place of Liz Melo, who led the FMG with great dedication over the past two and a half years.
With an outstanding career both on and off the golf course, Liliana Álvarez brings a unique combination of high-performance athletic experience, institutional leadership, and strategic vision—key qualities for strengthening and advancing the growth of golf in Mexico in the coming years.
Originally from Durango, Durango, Álvarez was a recognized professional golfer, beginning her career formally in 2008 and competing at the highest level, including the U.S. Women’s Open Championship in 2012. Her first experience with competitive golf came at a young age, when she played her first tournament on the Northern Zone Tour, earning a notable third place—marking the start of a career filled with achievements.
As an amateur, Liliana left her mark from her university years. She represented Tulane University, where she secured three collegiate tournament victories, including the Conference USA Championship, and was named 2003 Conference USA Player of the Year. She was also twice selected for the All-Conference First Team (2003 and 2004) and won the Mexican National Amateur Championship in 2004. She later continued her athletic development at Northwestern University, achieving five top-10 finishes in collegiate competitions.
Her competitive profile was further enriched by her participation in media and golf promotion platforms, notably as a finalist on the Golf Channel’s television series “Big Break: Sandals Resorts” in 2010.
After her professional playing career, Liliana Álvarez took on leadership roles in sports organizations. She served as Director of IGPM (Promoting Mexican Professional Golf), where she championed the growth and visibility of Mexican women golfers in the professional arena. She later assumed the same position at XUNTAS, where she played an active role in its evolution into a flagship community for women’s golf.
With this experience and a deep understanding of the national and international sports landscape, Álvarez steps into the role of FMG General Director with the mission of consolidating strategic projects, promoting the comprehensive development of golf in all categories, and strengthening the Federation’s institutional presence at every level.
“Liliana’s arrival represents a great opportunity for the Federation. Her experience as a high-performance athlete, her academic background, and her ability to manage institutions bring a fresh and strategic perspective to addressing the current challenges of Mexican golf. On behalf of the entire Board of Directors, we warmly welcome her, confident that her leadership will decisively contribute to the growth of our sport,” said Andrés Jurado Rivera Torres, President of the Mexican Golf Federation.
With this appointment, the FMG reaffirms its commitment to professionalizing its structures, promoting national talent, and strengthening the values that make golf an exemplary discipline.
