Argentine amateur Segundo Oliva Pinto ties for fourth to become the first amateur in Korn Ferry Tour history with two top-10 finishes in consecutive weeks.
SANTIAGO, Chile – American Doc Redman pulled away from the field to secure a dominant victory this Sunday at the Astara Chile Classic presented by Scotiabank. In the final round, he opened with three consecutive birdies on holes 1 through 3 and then decisively separated himself with four more birdies between holes 8 and 12. With a final round of 4-under-par 67 and a 19-under-par total of 265, Redman won by five strokes over fellow Americans Cooper Dossey and Michael Johnson.
Capturing his first title on a PGA TOUR-sanctioned circuit took nothing less than 177 tournaments: 125 on the PGA TOUR and 52 on the Korn Ferry Tour. Along the way he had come close several times, recording two runner-up finishes on the PGA TOUR and one on the Korn Ferry Tour.
“It means the world to me. It’s something I’ve been waiting for a long time,” said Redman about the elusive first professional victory he finally secured this week. “I’ve worked really hard through the ups and downs, with the support of my wife and my family. Believing in me and seeing this happen is incredibly satisfying and will give me a lot of confidence moving forward.”
Oliva Pinto Makes History as an Amateur
Another standout performer this week was Argentine amateur Segundo Oliva Pinto, who had already tied for seventh place last Sunday at the 119th VISA Open de Argentina presented by Macro. This week he played even better, finishing tied for fourth alongside fellow Argentine Jorge Fernández Valdés and two other players.
The 26-year-old became the first amateur in Korn Ferry Tour history to record two top-10 finishes in consecutive weeks, and only the second amateur to achieve top-10s in consecutive appearances. The only other amateur to post top-10 results in back-to-back Korn Ferry Tour starts was Morgan Hoffman, who finished tied for eighth at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship in 2009 and 2010.
“My mindset this week has been very relaxed with my caddie Manu Lozada, who is a genius. We’ve been very calm,” Oliva Pinto said. “We’re not playing for points or anything like that—we do it for the pure pleasure of competing, and that takes some of the pressure off.”
The result secured Oliva Pinto a spot in the Club Car Championship at The Landings Golf & Athletic Club, the next event on the tour, scheduled March 26–29 in Savannah, Georgia.
“At the start of this year my plan was always to remain an amateur until I earned a Tour card. For now, that plan remains, and if something changes in the coming weeks I’ll let you know,” he said shortly after signing the acceptance form for the next tournament.
Overall, it was a strong week for Argentine players, who placed four golfers inside the top 18.
The tie for fourth moved Jorge Fernández Valdés up to eighth place in the Points List, where he currently stands as the top Latin American player on Tour.
Augusto Núñez, who had missed the cut in the three tournaments he had played so far this season, produced a strong tie for eighth, which will significantly improve his priority ranking for entry into upcoming events.
Meanwhile, Vicente Marzilio, who made his fourth cut of the season, recorded his first top-25 finish with a tie for 18th.
The next-best Latin American finisher was Chilean Cristóbal Del Solar, who closed with a 4-under-par 67. That round moved him up 19 positions on the leaderboard to finish tied for 34th.
